MILITARY UNIVERSITY OF LAND FORCES

A series of lectures and historical trips, participation in a marathon run, rowing the famous trireme, a meeting of the EU Implementation Group and signing the Articles of Association of the Programme Board of the “International Military Leadership Academy” project were all part of the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the Military Erasmus Programme in Greece.

On 8-12 November 2018 the AWL delegation presided over by Rector Commandant Brigadier General Dariusz SKORUPKA, DSc, Eng. joined the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the Military Erasmus Programme in Athens. The event was organised by 3 Greek military higher education institutions: the Hellenic Army Academy, the Hellenic Air Force Academy and the Hellenic Naval Academy.

The anniversary event was attended by more than 100 participants representing nearly 30 military higher education institutions from almost 20 countries, including the USA and Canada.

The jubilee started with the official launch of the celebrations at the Hellenic Army Academy, followed by a series of lectures on the historic battles – of Marathon, Thermopylae and Salamis. The attendees also visited the Marathon battlefield, the famous Acropolis and the historic armoured cruiser “Georgios Averof” built in 1911.

As part of the sports challenge, some of the attendees participated in an hour-long cruise on a reconstructed trireme, i.e. an ancient naval ship with 3 rows of oars, propelled by one hundred and fifty rowers. This time the invited guests made up the ship’s crew, including AWL officers supported by Greek cadets.

Another sports event was the famous marathon run from Marathon to Athens, organised on 11 November, i.e. at the 100th anniversary of Poland's regained independence, which was also attended by representatives of our university. Before the marathon the runners participated in the anniversary celebrations organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Athens.

The celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the Military Erasmus Programme in Greece were also a great opportunity to introduce a wide audience to the Strategic Partnership project “The International Military Leadership Academy” (IMLA) implemented by AWL together with military academies from Greece and Portugal. During the event the Rector Commandants of 3 partner higher education institutions, i.e. General Tadeusz Kościuszko Military University of Land Forces, the Military Academy in Lisbon and the Hellenic Army Academy in Athens signed the Articles of Association of the Programme Board of the IMLA. The implementation of the international project with AWL as the leader is aimed at effectively supporting the formation process of commanders at military higher education institutions in EU Member States.

The anniversary celebrations also featured the 40th jubilee meeting of the Implementation Group, which is responsible for the performance of the Military Erasmus Programme in the European Union.

The visit ended with a closing ceremony held at the Hellenic Air Force Academy in Athens. All participants received commemorative certificates and medals.
