-You are given officer ranks in a special year, in the 100th anniversary of Poland’s independence. This is a distinction and a duty. You will be responsible for your subordinates, for whom you should be role models. I am sure, you will complete this task in exemplary fashion.  The Polish Army needs more officers, but also more soldiers in general, which is why you deserve utmost respect - said Mariusz Błaszczak, Minister of the National Defence, in his address to the 215 alumni of the Military University of Land Forces in Wrocław (AWL), receiving their first officer ranks.

The ceremony was held on 7 September on the assembly square. It was attended by many distinguished guests, including among others: Minister of the National Defence Mariusz Błaszczak, First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces Lieutenant General Michał Sikora, General Commander of Polish Armed Forces Jarosław Mika, Director of the Budget Department, Ministry of the National Defence Gen. Sławomir Pączek, Head of the State Defence Service Gen. PhD Tomasz Miłkowski, the chief of the Border Guards of Nadodrzański division, Gen. Brig.  Wojciech Skowronek.  The gathering saw the participation of representatives of the Ministry of National Defence, the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, the General Command of Branches of the Armed Forces, the Operational Command of Branches of the Armed Forces, military units, the police, the clergy, voivodeship and local-government authorities, as well as of national and foreign universities.

The promotion to the first officer rank was performed by: First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces Lieutenant General Michał Sikora and General Commander of Polish Armed Forces,  Lieutenant General Jarosław Mika. The graduates, after approaching the podium, kneeled, and the promoting officer said the following words “In the name of the President of the Republic of Poland, I nominate you second lieutenants of the Polish Army". After stating this formula, the generals touched the left arm of the graduates with the point of a sabre. During the ceremony, the newly nominated officers took an official oath and sang "Knight’s Song".

- On this festive day, I would like to congratulate you, my fellow soldiers, and express my sincerest respect. Respect for your diligence and perseverance, without which today’s success would be impossible. At the same time I ask you to remember the words of the officer’s oath, stating that "the interest of the Republic of Poland is our supreme law". These words should guide your service, which fundamental goal is to provide a high level of security for our Homeland - said the Rector Commandant, General Brig. DSc Eng. Dariusz Skorupka was awarded.

A pastoral blessing was given by: Archbishop, full Prof. . DSc Jerzy Pańkowski, Prelate Colonel Janusz Radzik and  Rev. Lieutenant Colonel Sławomir Fonfara

The AWL Rector Commandant distinguished the three best second lieutenants with commemorative rings of the University for their high performance in official tasks, initiative in service and exemplary attitude. The awards went to: Second Lieutenant Maja Forjasz, Second Lieutenant Marcin Konieczny and Second Lieutenant Angelika Jasnosz.

The promotion concluded with a dynamic demonstration of the operation of a motorised infantry subunit cooperating with OT soldiers and a parade of subunits participating in the ceremony, which was led by the Representative Orchestra of Land Forces from Wrocław and the honour guard of AWL.
