MILITARY UNIVERSITY OF LAND FORCES

From 16 to 17 October 2019, the Polish Red Cross Honorary Blood Donors Club at the Military University of Land Forces organised the first blood donation campaign in this academic year. The event was part of the nationwide campaign "Independence is in our blood", in which AWL actively participates for the second time.

- The first edition of the campaign was organised last year, when we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Regaining Independence by Poland. We joined this initiative, not only to express our solidarity with other Honorary Blood Donors military clubs and to commemorate the next Anniversary of Regaining Independence by Poland, but, above all, to support  the Regional Blood Donation and Treatment Centre in Wrocław with an irreplaceable medication, which is blood  - says Tomasz Nowicki, Vice President of the Polish Red Cross Honorary Blood Donors Club at AWL.

During the two-day event, 86.4 liters of blood were collected from 192 people. The Rector Commandant of the Military University of Land Forces , Brig. Gen. Dariusz Skorupka, was one of the blood donors. The vast majority of blood donors consisted of cadets and the University staff, but there were also a few people who visited us for this particular reason.

- 257 people volunteered to donate blood, 65 of whom will have to try again, as the requirements for blood donors are quite strict. It is necessary to be completely healthy, drink at least a liter of fluids before donation, or have an adequate level of haemoglobin in the blood - adds Nowicki.

Blood donors will be able to donate blood again after the period of 8 weeks. The next blood donation campaign will be organised on 12 and 13 November this year.
